Once in a while – definitely not always – you just have to go with your gut.
You know that feeling…you’re making a decision (at work, in life, somewhere) and for some reason, something doesn’t sit right. You can’t quantify it. You can’t articulate it. Something’s just not right. But, how do you gain buy-in for something you can’t quantify or articulate?
Ask for more time.
Ask for a day, or even a few hours to understand the root cause of your discomfort. The key however to asking for the time is that you need to block off at least an hour to just sit there and think. If you’re at the office, go get a cup of coffee by yourself and map out on a piece of paper (or in the sky, in the sand box, etc..) at what point in the conversation you began to feel discomfort.
In order to successfully articulate yourself, you just need some time to work through your thoughts and organize the words. Set yourself up for success by asking for the time!
